Not a bad book。 It was definitely geared towards a younger audience。 Some chapters follow a side story that took place 25 years or so before the main story - those chapters felt like fluff。 They didn't add as much to the character development as they were meant to。 A couple of the new characters were likeable。 I wish it had some connections to the more familiar star wars characters。 It mentions Yoda once but that is about it。 Not a bad book。 It was definitely geared towards a younger audience。 Some chapters follow a side story that took place 25 years or so before the main story - those chapters felt like fluff。 They didn't add as much to the character development as they were meant to。 A couple of the new characters were likeable。 I wish it had some connections to the more familiar star wars characters。 It mentions Yoda once but that is about it。 。。。more
Caleb Dillinger,
This book has an intriguing plot with diverse, creative characters。 It suffers from a pacing issue that at least for the first half of the book I found very off putting, but aside from that, a very enjoyable book。
Mati,
The world building and characters were dull。 It was painful to read every chapter as story sluggishly continued。 I read lot of strange EU books of dubious quality but even those were more interesting。 High Republic would not be for me。

This is the story of what happens when a bookworm introvert gets thrown into adventure。 The beginning was good, the middle was a little predictable, and the ending dragged on a little too long but overall I liked it。 Almost all of the characters showed growth。 My only complaint was that the ending for Affie Hollow seemed a little preachy and not as natural as the other endings。Favorite Quotes: "That was one thing they never told you about being a master—that sometimes teaching a hard lesson hurt This is the story of what happens when a bookworm introvert gets thrown into adventure。 The beginning was good, the middle was a little predictable, and the ending dragged on a little too long but overall I liked it。 Almost all of the characters showed growth。 My only complaint was that the ending for Affie Hollow seemed a little preachy and not as natural as the other endings。Favorite Quotes: "That was one thing they never told you about being a master—that sometimes teaching a hard lesson hurt more than learning it。""The mere making of a decision sometimes had as much power as any action。 Purpose clarified every move, every thought。""There’s no point in reacting to a lack of calm in a way that makes you even less calm。” 。。。more

A decent introduction to some new foes, some characters seem a little flat and the hero is unsure of themselves。Just felt like the same hero story the Star Wars books has told before nothing too ground breaking。

I’m happy to have an ace character in something I love, but this needed to go back to the drawing board。 I read that scene over two weeks ago and I am still incensed。 Jfc why is this book so bad at ace representation *slams head on keyboard in frustration*That being said, I’m definitely reading all The High Republic content I can get my hands on。 。。。more

Into the Dark is everything that I wanted Light of the Jedi to be。 Claudia Gray just “gets” Star Wars more than any other current writer in the new canon。 Reath Silas is the most interesting character introduced in the High Republic era so far。 He doesn’t crave adventure and excitement。 He’d rather spend his time researching in the Jedi archives。 But when he reluctantly gets pulled in to a conflict and has to rely on his battle training, he rises to the occasion in a big way。 He is the Jedi vers Into the Dark is everything that I wanted Light of the Jedi to be。 Claudia Gray just “gets” Star Wars more than any other current writer in the new canon。 Reath Silas is the most interesting character introduced in the High Republic era so far。 He doesn’t crave adventure and excitement。 He’d rather spend his time researching in the Jedi archives。 But when he reluctantly gets pulled in to a conflict and has to rely on his battle training, he rises to the occasion in a big way。 He is the Jedi version of Peter Parker。 When confronted by a new terrifying enemy, he makes nervous small talk to throw them off guard。 I really liked this story and the characters who did n’t necessarily buy in to the rigid, detached ways of the Jedi order。The publisher provided an advanced copy of this title for review。 。。。more

Loved it。Unlike Light of the Jedi, this one was a smaller story taking place (mostly) in one part of the galaxy and having less characters。 The story was very interesting, even though the first part was kinda slow for me and i wasn't really into the whole "abandoned space station", the story made a turn for good and it became super fun。 I like Claudia Gray's writing style a lot and it's very easy to read。 Not a huge fun of the multiple POV sections in each chapter, it felt tiresome sometimes。Out Loved it。Unlike Light of the Jedi, this one was a smaller story taking place (mostly) in one part of the galaxy and having less characters。 The story was very interesting, even though the first part was kinda slow for me and i wasn't really into the whole "abandoned space station", the story made a turn for good and it became super fun。 I like Claudia Gray's writing style a lot and it's very easy to read。 Not a huge fun of the multiple POV sections in each chapter, it felt tiresome sometimes。Out of all the characters, Reath Silas was the one i like the most (and Geode obviously, that guy needs he's own book, tv show and movie。 Every time he was named, made me chuckle)。 The other Jedi were interesting and likeable but not enoguh for me to like them more than Reath。 But after reading this book, i hope they make appearances in future books or comics because their story arc was intriguing and i can see a lot of possibilities for them。 Audiobook narrated by Dan Bittner: I don't remember him narrating another Star Wars book but OMG! This guy is amazing, the narration was perfect。 I don't know if he's better than Marc Thompson but i hope he keeps narrating books for Star Wats, what a gem。Overall, an excellent installment in this new era of Star Wars。 I couldn't ask for more。 I'm gonna though。 I WANT MORE!!! 。。。more

I love how the Master Cohmac, Orla, and Reath challenge their relationship with the Force and the Jedi Order in different ways。 Cohmac meditates on the meaning of dark vs light, Orla is a Wayseeker, and Reath is a Jocasta Nu type who would rather spend time in the Jedi Archives than see combat。 They all end up working together in this adventure, but I won't give spoilers。I sincerely look forward to seeing how the characters develop! Some decent character stuff (Reath and Affie are easily the best characters) but the plot doesn't do a huge amount of interesting stuff - and actively requires you to have read Light of the Jedi for certain plot points - and the Amaxine Station isn't very interesting as a main locale either, which, pacing issues also keep it from being more thoroughly explored and perhaps given more depth, as the book itself isn't that long。 Some decent character stuff (Reath and Affie are easily the best characters) but the plot doesn't do a huge amount of interesting stuff - and actively requires you to have read Light of the Jedi for certain plot points - and the Amaxine Station isn't very interesting as a main locale either, which, pacing issues also keep it from being more thoroughly explored and perhaps given more depth, as the book itself isn't that long。 。。。more

A fun adventure, but I enjoyed the first half more than the second。 A lot of things were done and then undone, which seemed to diminish their importance。 I enjoyed getting the story from so many different perspectives though — very “Star Wars。”

The High Republic publishing initiative continues to impress。 In contrast to Light of The Jedi, Into The Dark takes a smaller, yet equally as expansive approach to telling a story in this newborn era。 The book starts off a bit slow and it took me a few chapters to really get into things, but once they arrive on the space station it’s a fantastic story。 One thing I’ve adored about The High Republic is how elegantly the Jedi are portrayed。 Specially their connection to The Force。 Claudia Grey cont The High Republic publishing initiative continues to impress。 In contrast to Light of The Jedi, Into The Dark takes a smaller, yet equally as expansive approach to telling a story in this newborn era。 The book starts off a bit slow and it took me a few chapters to really get into things, but once they arrive on the space station it’s a fantastic story。 One thing I’ve adored about The High Republic is how elegantly the Jedi are portrayed。 Specially their connection to The Force。 Claudia Grey continues this trend and manages to write some very profound philosophical ideals of the Jedi into her story。 As someone who believes in a lot of these Buddest and yogic type practices, I really love seeing them embodied so passionately。 After all, these are the things that, to me, form the basis of Star Wars ideals。 The characters are pretty great all around。 When I’m reading, I generally have some wishful hopes that some characters will die because it’s tragic and can add stakes to the story (when done appropriately of course), but I found myself genuinely being worried for these characters and hoping no one would die because I was enjoying my time with them so much。 Geode so damn simple but he’s a treasure in the Star Wars universe。 I can’t wait for the second wave of HR novels to drop because they’ve been truly special so far。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Three and a half stars。 Claudia Gray has again proven herself to be the best author in the Disney-era canon of Star Wars novels, though Into the Dark does not reach the same heights as her previous efforts Lost Stars, Master and Apprentice, and Bloodlines。 My issue with this High Republic tale is the same issue I have with all High Republic tales in general: I am simply not interested in the “frontier” vibe and would much prefer to see what the Republic is up to within Core Worlds。 As a result, Three and a half stars。 Claudia Gray has again proven herself to be the best author in the Disney-era canon of Star Wars novels, though Into the Dark does not reach the same heights as her previous efforts Lost Stars, Master and Apprentice, and Bloodlines。 My issue with this High Republic tale is the same issue I have with all High Republic tales in general: I am simply not interested in the “frontier” vibe and would much prefer to see what the Republic is up to within Core Worlds。 As a result, much of the novel did not feel like a different era of Star Wars, and could have taken place during the Original Trilogy (if it wasn’t for the Nihils and the widespread Jedi Order。) With that said, Claudia Gray did her best to craft a story to draw out the unique elements, and I respect that。 The entire book was not set in the frontier, but we often return to Coruscant to analyze the mysteries of the ancient statues found within the Amaxine space station。 These Dark Side mysteries discovered by our protagonists Reath, Cohmac, and Orla was the best part of the book。 I enjoy a good mystery, especially a mystery within Star Wars。 Other good characters was Affie, her humorous Han Solo-like pilot friend Leox, and Geode, (who is quite literally。。。。。 a giant rock。) Because I cared for these aforementioned character much more than anybody in recent Star Wars novels, I found this book lightyears ahead of such recent fare as Alphabet Squadron and the Aftermath trilogy。 There were problems with the novel, however。 For one, I did not find Affie’s subplot compelling in the context of this book; her discovery of Byrne Guild’s practice of using indentured pilots under Scover’s order should have been its own separate novel。 Another drawback is the lack of descriptive details bringing readers into this world; as it stood, I did not get a good sense of what the mysterious idols looked like, nor any architectural characteristics of the Amaxine space station。 I wanted to “see” these details more and felt unable to do so with the prose written。 The Drengir, (who I had heard about before reading the novel,) were much more ominous and compelling than I had feared talking plants would be。 They are a suitable threat to the characters in this story, with their ability to draw away one’s Force powers, and the primal desire for “meat。” It was reminiscent of the spiders in Tolkien’s The Hobbit, with a touch of Little Shop of Horrors。 The Drengir, however, can not (or should not) replace the Nihil or Sith as main villains in this space opera。 They are good as secondary villains, but do not have the cognitive abilities to carry on as true menaces。 。。。more

Ive read several books by Claudia Gray, most of which ones I would recommend。 This one is part of the additions to Disney's Star Wars canon。 But the trouble with adding stories to the canon by looking backwards is the authors do not benefit from the reader coming to these stories from an informed place。 Into the Dark has all the trappings of your expected Star Wars lore, unique names, personal conflicts between good and evil, and of course Homeric events。 In this case, though Im afraid its both Ive read several books by Claudia Gray, most of which ones I would recommend。 This one is part of the additions to Disney's Star Wars canon。 But the trouble with adding stories to the canon by looking backwards is the authors do not benefit from the reader coming to these stories from an informed place。 Into the Dark has all the trappings of your expected Star Wars lore, unique names, personal conflicts between good and evil, and of course Homeric events。 In this case, though Im afraid its both all too new and to forced to understand。 There are currently two novels in the High Republic story line the tell the same timeline of events。 When multiple writers work on projects like this you get what you expect。 A confusing plot line。 。。。more
